June’s Volunteer of the Month: Angie Hudkins
Angie pairs deep commitment with a big heart.
Nearly a year and a half ago, Angie joined Teen Feed’s crew of volunteers. Having never worked with young people before, in a little over a year Angie has grown and developed into one of Teen Feed’s most rock-solid volunteers. Angie has great listening skills, and an extraordinary depth of compassion. A student at University of Washington, Angie is also pursuing her Bachelors Degree in Social Work. We are so glad Angie is here for the young people we serve on Friday nights!
How long have you been volunteering at Teen Feed?
One year and 5 months this June!
How did you get involved with Teen Feed?
Teen Feed was listed in the program form the school of social work for Community Service Learning program. There were many options – I narrowed it down to two choices but Teen Feed was the only one I called. I knew I wanted to volunteer some place with teens. I looked at the web site and the mission statement caught me. I was particularly called by the idea of building connections and was intrigued because I had never worked with homeless or street involved youth.
What is your favorite thing about volunteering at Teen Feed?
The people, all the youth that are involved here. I like working as a volunteer and being a part of a team. Sometimes there are some really great conversations to be had.
What do you like to do outside of volunteering?
I am a full time student and that kind of dictates my life right now. But if I had it my way I would dance – I like swing and salsa. I also watch reruns of Dog Whisperer.
What did you eat today?
A Nook cheddar and chive biscuit and an americano.
What have you learned from volunteering at Teen Feed?
I have learned the degree of impact that a positive relationship can have on those involved. It has a far reaching impact and I didn’t realize before how far it could go. At Teen Feed I have definitely been able to see that.
